From TRILLION to ZERO, all the words used to describe a QUADRILLION numbers. Each word has been colour coded, using a colour alphabet, and written serially to a square format (on aluminium in this presentation). Individual words have also been coded and can be viewed, alongside this outcome, in the ART by REVAD PRINT SPACE.
Sol LeWitt is a major source of inspiration. The way LeWitt rationally dissects an idea to produce (often serial) outcomes, connects well with my own experience as an artist / engineer. One tension that is often present in (LeWitt’s outcomes) is the balance between the value of the idea and the value of the final outcome. Of course, as a famous 20th Century artist, his work has great monetary value, but (here) I am more interested in the artistic value of this (materially) simple outcome. I have chosen ALL IFS ANDS OR BUTS CONNECTED BY GREEN LINES for its value as an idea, an idea any other artist can work with. The title of my outcome is 100 SIGNIFICANT AND CONNECTED FIGURES OF PI, which pretty much says everything I need to say about the trigger thought behind my variation on LeWitt’s idea. However, you may also be interested in the medium: it is an ink on aluminium print. I constructed the final digital print file by: scanning original hand-made marker pen drawings; combining these with hand-made digital drawings; and finally applying bespoke algorithms (of my own design) to combine the 20+ analogue and digital layers into a large scale digital print file (61cm x 61cm in this presentation). In my own way, by making my digital file, I have made a 21st Century record of my instructions for the printer to reproduce the outcome.
This line of enquiry informed my BA Fine Art final exhibition (13 Degrees) and continues to this day, with new outcomes appearing intermittently. A three panel, six surface ‘booth’. The outer surface ‘clad’ with overlaid drawings on paper, tracing paper and OHP film, hung using A4 office binding combs, steel rods and eyelets. The inner surface with hung drawings and a kinetic outcome presented on a digital photo frame. This was the first installation of the circle, square and triangle components. I have all the components and it could be reinstalled.
